Epping Forest
Descrizione

Epping Forest is the biggest open space accessible to the general public in the whole of Greater London. The forest stretches for 6000 acres, right from north east London out to the M25 circular. The area used to be a royal hunting ground dating back to Henry I in the 12th century. Yet the history of the place dates back much, much further - as far back as 8000BC. You can see the remains of two Iron Age sites there even today. People have used Epping Forest's fertile land for hundreds of years, both to grow crops and to graze their farm animals.

Aside from Epping Forest's fascinating history, the area is also one of outstanding natural beauty. Full of grasslands, ponds, park areas, and of course many magnificent trees, this is one of London's best places for nature lovers. Horse riders are welcome in the park, as are dog walkers, mountain bikers, trekkers and indeed anyone who enjoys a good walk in some of Britain's most attractive countryside. If you fancy a bike ride and don't have yours with you in London, don't worry because bikes can be hired on-site at Epping Forest.

This area is lucky to have escaped London's fierce urban development plans and remains one of the city's greenest regions. Make sure you visit the Epping Forest information centre, which runs a wide variety of outdoor entertainment activities, such as orienteering sessions, model aeroplane flying, tree planting and guided walks of the park. If you choose to take your own walk through the forest, don't miss the Temple and Wanstead Park, or Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge.
